For Aristotle, there are three objective criteria of beauty: symmetry, harmony of proportion and precision. For Charles Auguste Baud [1], function is an intrinsic criterion of beauty.

A beautiful face implies orthognathic (good congruence of the dental arches, good permeability of the upper aero-digestive tract, a functional oculo-motor apparatus (the beauty of the gaze), good motor skills (a beautiful face is smiling), and so on.

Sensory experience shows us, however, that these academic criteria are not enough to define beauty. For example, a strictly symmetrical face does not appear beautiful to us. Digital photography offers the possibility of recomposing completely left- or right-handed faces by inverting and reattaching half the image.

Experimental psychology studies have significantly established that the human eye prefers faces with a left and right side, i.e. slightly asymmetrical. Comparison is not a reason, but the towers of Notre Dame de Paris are not symmetrical, and yet this cathedral is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.
