What is abdominoplasty?
When there is significant distension of the abdomen with loss of tone and significant stretch marks and/or alterations to the muscular wall (loosening, diastasis or hernias), liposuction alone will not correct the figure and abdominoplasty, also known as abdominoplasty or abdominal dermolipectomy, will be required.
How is the procedure performed?
The aim of abdominoplasty is to remove excess skin and fat from the waistline, and to pull down the skin above the navel. In most cases, the umbilicus must be transposed so as not to be displaced too far downwards, thus giving a natural appearance. The skin removed is often the most damaged (distended, scarred or stretch marks).
The scar is horizontal, flush with the pubic hair, and extends more or less far up into the groyne folds. It can be concealed by undergarments.
Abdominoplasty may be combined with liposuction. If distended, the abdominal muscles are re-tensioned. Depending on the case, the operation lasts between 90 minutes and 3 hours. Like all operations, it can be fraught with complications, the most dreaded of which is pulmonary embolism.
Specific preventive measures are taken: wearing anti-thrombosis stockings, getting up early and, above all, taking anticoagulant medication.
This is a procedure that has benefited́ from numerous technical improvements: lighter anaesthetic procedures, so-called “high-tension superior” techniques, padding methods, improved suture quality, advances in dressings and compression sheaths.
