What is a medical facelift?

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) was originally developed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. Since 2007, they have also been used for skin rejuvenation.

Like sunlight through a lens, ultrasound is focused at different depths to generate selective coagulation points. These may be in the superficial dermis, deep dermis, subcutaneous tissue or SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system).

These coagulation points do not cause damage to the epidermis or distant tissues. The healing process that follows generates skin retraction.

Advantages of HIFU

The advantage of this system is that there is no need to avoid social contact, and it can be used on darker skins, unlike some lasers. Finally, HIFU leads to an increase in the concentration of collagen and elastin fibers. We have conducted a study confirming its efficacy in the submental region[2]. It is, however, a painful technique, and specific preparation is required. In addition, areas where the main nerves are located must be carefully avoided, otherwise they may be damaged. A good knowledge of facial anatomy is required.
